My work consists of watercolor on paper and acrylic on canvas or paper. I like a substantial piece of paper . . . so my works are on 300-pound archival Arches. I like the variety of working in both mediums since they have very different qualities. In acrylic, I work in an opaque style. In watercolor, I work in the classic transparent style while sometimes starting with some pen and ink. The key to watercolor, and the fun, is letting it tell me what it wants to do instead of trying to control it. I make suggestions to a work in watercolor and it decides for itself what it wants to do. It's spontaneous, mysterious, moody, and always an exciting surprise--like a great marriage.
What I like to try to do in my work is to capture fleeting moments in time that we all see in God's awesome creation. The acrylic medium, for me, is a vehicle for capturing the awesome light that the sun paints upon the clouds during the early morning or late in the day. Those last few moments in a day are my favorite, a time when the day is done and striving gives way to rest. With watercolor I can capture warmth and texture. I can render moods. I guess I love, as the songwriter wrote, "misty watercolor memories." I want to capture these sights and memories that last only moments, and put them on paper or canvas for people to enjoy for a lifetime.
