"Bill Mack enjoys one of the most successful and high profile careers
in American contemporary art. He works in a style known as 'Romantic Realism.'
He is the world's preeminent relief sculptor, and one of America's most successful
figurative artists. Relief sculpture is sculpture that is not freestanding.
The format has its origins in ancient temple, frieze and tomb reliefs -- typically
carved in marble -- and in ancient minting. In having a background, relief sculpture
approximates to the condition of painting, however incorporating a 'foreshortened'
third dimension. Bill Mack is a master draftsman. His sculptures derive from
painstaking drawings and paintings of the figure -- a classic skill in art that
is rare in today's contemporary scene. Countless studies of the live model prefigure
his each and every sculptural work.
Bill Mack is also regarded as one of the finest full-round sculptors living
today. His current works range in size from limited edition cast bronze sculptures
that are approximately 24" h, to life-size and larger works. In many of
his full-round works, Mack uses a unique combination of materials to clearly
distinguish them from otherwise similar artworks. This includes works combining
cast bronze with other materials such as resins and acrylic.
Bill Mack's work is in the line of romantic realism, of which the pre-Raphaelite
painters are a leading historical example. Mack updates his figures with a touch
of signature 'athleticism', which differentiates them, however, from pre-Raphaelite
figures. Then again, the artist's flamboyant use of drapery and garments of
half-undress is Romantic, even proto-Baroque, in spirit. His figurative artworks
are regarded as sophisticated representations of the modern female form by viewers,
critics, and domestic and international clients, young and old, male and female,
and from all socio-economic demographics.
Without a doubt, Bill Mack's creations are strikingly unique in the world of
art. In or out of his studio, the mustachioed Mack, wearing his signature red
rose, is a unusual man and artist, influencing today's world of contemporary
art."
